Violence broke out in the Harehills district of Leeds on Thursday night, with hundreds of youths clashing with police, setting fire to a double-decker bus and overturning a police patrol car.

The incidents are believed to have started when social workers from the welfare service took four minor children from their guardians at around 5pm local time.

Images on social media showed the crowd throwing objects at police officers and causing damage, including a bus fire started with lighters.

Residents said the move by the welfare agency was deemed excessive and sparked the backlash.

Local police blamed the incidents on a “criminal minority” bent on violence, with the responsible Home Secretary Yvette Cooper saying she was appalled by the scenes that unfolded.
