The two huge tankers that burst into flames early Friday morning after a collision off Singapore are still burning.

The fire broke out in the tanker “Hafnia Nile“, under the flag of Singapore, and on the crude oil tanker “Ceres I“, under the flag of São Tomé and Príncipe, about 55 kilometers northeast of the islet of Pedra Branca.

The 74,000-ton Panamax tanker Hafnia Nile was carrying about 300,000 barrels of naphtha, according to vessel tracking data from Kpler and LSEG.

It is not yet clear what fuel the 300,000-ton Ceres I, a “dark fleet” tanker typically involved in the Iran/Venezuela trade, was carrying.

It was last seen carrying Iranian crude from March to April, according to vessel tracking data.

Great concern for environmental contamination

This maritime accident “raises new questions about the growing risks to marine traffic, the environment and human lives on one of the world’s busiest waterways,” reports Bloomberg.

According to Reuters, environmental authorities in neighboring Malaysia said they were ready to take action in the event of an oil spill.
