His government Panama estimates that in 2-3 months he will start deporting illegal immigrants who entered the country by crossing the inhospitable jungle of Darien, as announced yesterday Friday by the head of the National Immigration Service (SNM), Roger Mohica.

The cost of the flights will be covered by the US, as part of an agreement recently reached between the two governments. Mojica clarified that the final details are being determined, in consultation with Washington. “We estimate that we will be able to start the process in two to three months”, he stressed.

Panama’s new president, Jose Raul Molino, has pledged to curb illegal immigration. It works closely with the US to prevent illegal immigrants from entering through the Darien jungle.

It is one of the most dangerous migratory routes in the world, which connects the south with the central part of the American continent. Last year, an estimated 520,000 people crossed the dangerous jungle, hoping to reach the US in the hope of a better life. This year, Panamanian authorities estimate that 213,702 irregular migrants, including many children, entered the country through the Darien jungle.
