A man was killed overnight Saturday into Sunday and another was injured in clashes related to neighborhood rivalries in Creteil, southeast of Paris, the city’s prosecutor’s office said today.

Eleven people, including four minors, were arrested and an investigation into homicide and attempted homicide by an organized gang was launched, the prosecutor’s office said.

According to a police source, police received several calls overnights, shortly after midnight, who reported explosions and the gathering of about 30 gunmen wearing hoods, who fled when police arrived.

Two people who suffered stab wounds were taken to hospital. One succumbed “to his injuries,” the prosecutor’s office said, while the other person’s health is not in danger.

The death comes after several incidents of youth violence that have strongly affected public opinion in France.

In May, a 17-year-old died in Poitiers after being stabbed in the neck in a fight between rival gangs.

A month earlier, a 15-year-old boy was stabbed to death during a brawl in Satoru and a 15-year-old student succumbed to his injuries after being beaten outside a school in Viry-Chatillon, in the Paris region.

After several other similar tragic incidents, the government launched a cross-ministerial plan in June 2021 to combat this phenomenon, including measures such as increased monitoring of social media, the creation of social worker posts in police services, schools, among other measures.
