The director of the US Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, has resigned from her position following heavy criticism of her for attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump on July 13, according to NBC News.

Kimberly Cheatle, who served as director of the Secret Services as of August 2022, she has faced mounting calls for her resignation and multiple inquiries into how the gunman was able to get close enough to shoot at Ottonald Trump at an outdoor campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

“I take full responsibility for the security lapses,” he said in an email to staff on Tuesday. “In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to resign as your manager.”

Cheatle’s resignation comes a day after he appeared before a congressional committee where he faced hours of criticism from both Democrats and Republicans over the former president’s security failures. He called the attempt on Trump’s life the Secret Service’s “most significant operational failure” in decades and said he took full responsibility for the security lapses, but would not answer specific questions about the investigation.

At Monday’s hearing, Cheatle insisted she was the “right person” to lead the Secret Service, even as she took full responsibility for the security lapses. When Rep. Nancy Mays, a Republican, told Chittle to start drafting her letter of resignation from the hearing room, he replied, “No, thank you.”
