Members of the Algerian armed forces killed three armed “terrorists” during an operation in the northern part of the country, the Ministry of Defense in Algiers announced yesterday Sunday.

“As part of the anti-terrorist fight, a military detachment killed three dangerous terrorists yesterday (i.e. the day before Saturday) named as “Debar Boumediene, Hamnes Ibrahim and Alali Mohamed”, during a clearing operation in El Ataf, Ain Governorate Defla, the press release states.

Within the limits of the operation, two Kalashnikov assault rifles and ammunition were located and confiscated, according to the same source.

Algeria’s military often announces that it has captured or killed “terrorists,” the terminology authorities use to refer to armed Islamists who remain active despite the end of the country’s civil conflict (1992-2002).

During this “black decade” some 200,000 people were killed, according to official data.

Despite the 2005 peace and reconciliation agreement, which was supposed to allow Algeria to turn the page on the war, armed groups continue to launch sporadic attacks.

According to an AFP tally based on Defense Ministry press releases, 35 “terrorists” have been killed and another 256 people have been arrested allegedly belonging to armed Islamist organizations or as part of operations by the armed forces since January 1, 2024.
