The UN secretary-general called for “full transparency” in Venezuela after Caracas announced Nicolas Maduro’s victory in the presidential election, which the opposition is contesting.

“We noted the announcement of the electoral authorities as well as the concerns expressed by political actors and members of the international community. The secretary-general calls for full transparency and the publication, in due time, of the results of the elections by electoral district,” said Antonio Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric. At the same time, he appealed “to all political leaders and their supporters” to show “moderation”.

In the meantime, Panama has been added to the countries questioning Maduro’s victory. The country’s president, Jose Raul Molino, has announced that diplomatic relations with Venezuela are being severed and diplomatic personnel will be withdrawn from Caracas until the election results are fully reviewed.

Instead, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said his government would recognize the final result “if the electoral authority confirms it.”

Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) declared Maduro the winner with 51.2%, with 80% of the votes counted.
