Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan did not hide his dissatisfaction with Brussels, on the occasion of the broad support for the Ukrainian request for membership in the European Union and for yesterday’s speech by President Volodymyr Zelensi in the European Parliament.
“Now Zelensky is speaking in the European Parliament and he is being applauded standing up. Good fact, but as the saying goes, “an unpleasant event is better than a thousand pieces of advice,” Erdogan said.
He protested because, as he said, Turkey has been waiting for almost 60 years to join the EU and wondered if there should be a war in his own country for Brussels to show sensitivity.
“I say to the EU member states, show the sensitivity you are now showing in Ukraine for Turkey as well. “Only when someone declares war on Turkey and attacks it will you put Turkey on your agenda?” Erdogan stressed.
On the occasion of the sending of weapons systems to Ukraine by NATO and EU countries, the Turkish president expressed his dissatisfaction with the non-sale of weapons in his country. He even accused NATO and EU countries of keeping their distance from Turkey on the issue of defense, that they do not show solidarity and that “they are just words”.
“There are countries in the EU that we need to work with. Many of these countries are also members of NATO. And yet, Turkey is also a member of NATO, but in the matter of the defense industry they do not approach Turkey, they keep their distance. But we are together we are allies. Why not give up weapons, vehicles, ammunition and other weapons systems? This is also part of our solidarity. But they do not give them to us. Are they waiting for war to break out again? They are not honest. “NATO members produce only words and EU members are only words,” he said.
