Mexico will not impose financial sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Tuesday.
He also criticized what he called the censorship of state-funded Russian media by social media.
“We will not take any financial measures because we want to have good relations with all the governments in the world,” Lopez Obrador told a news conference.
He added: “I do not agree with the fact that the media of Russia or any other country are censored.”
The Mexican president’s remarks came in response to a question about his interest in Mexico’s second-largest oil company, Lukoil, and Russian airline Aeroflot.
Lukoil announced on Friday that it had completed the acquisition of a 50% stake in an offshore oil rig in Mexico, a move the company is seeking to expand globally.
The government of the Mexican president has condemned the invasion of Ukraine, but so far has not openly criticized Russia.
Moscow has established close ties with various governments in Latin America, mainly Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, but its relations with Mexico are limited due to the country’s close ties with the United States.
