Three inmates were killed and nine others are hospitalized after a fight inside a maximum security prison in Nevada, USA, local authorities said.

According to the office of Gov. Joe Lombardo, it was a conflict between gangs, Las Vegas channel KVVU-TV reported.

The fight took place on Tuesday afternoon at the Ely State Prison, in a rural area about 250 km north of Las Vegas. This prison, the only maximum security in Nevada, also houses death row inmates.

No corrections officers were injured. Authorities did not say what caused the fight, nor did they say how many other inmates were injured but did not require treatment. The nine hospitalized have stab wounds.

Due to the riots, visiting was banned indefinitely in all prisons in the State.

The Ely prison has a capacity of 1,183 prisoners and employs more than 400 staff. All 60 of Nevada’s death row inmates are held there today. In 2022, dozens of prisoners went on hunger strike, protesting his poor detention conditions and insufficient food.

This year alone, 21 inmate deaths have been reported across all Nevada prisons, and two of those were in Ely.
