Crowds gathered early Friday morning in Doha for the funeral of Hamas leader Ismail Haniya.

His body arrived at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque, also known as the Grand Mosque of the State of Qatar, in Doha on Friday morning and the funeral prayer began immediately after the regular prayer.

Strong security measures have been taken by the authorities with the attendees subject to physical control while, at the same time, they are prohibited from holding phones, reports Al Jazeera. Dozens of state officials are participating in the funeral, including Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who is in Doha.

After the funeral prayer was concluded, Haniya’s body was escorted by a large crowd to Lusail Cemetery, north of Doha, where he was buried.

Before Haniya’s funeral, Haqqan Fidan met with senior Hamas official Khaled Meshaal, who is rumored to be the new leader of Hamas. Fidan expressed his condolences to Meshaal on the death of Ismail Haniya.
