After Iran warned that it would retaliate for the killing of the political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyathe White House national security communications adviser John Kirby said that the United States they are ready to move additional troops to the Middle East if needed.
“The US is always reviewing its military force posture in the Middle East to make sure we have what we need to defend ourselves, our troops, our facilities – and our allies and partners, like Israel Kirby said.
At the same time, he added that “I don’t think it would be good for me to go into too much detail about it.”
Kirby’s remarks come after Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, threatened Israel with revenge after Haniya’s death in Tehran. “You killed our guest in our house and now you have opened the way for your harsh punishment,” Khamenei said on Wednesday.
“We heard from the supreme leader of Iran clearly that he intends to avenge the assassination of the leader of Hamas in Tehran and that he wants them to carry out another attack on Israel,” Kirby said. “We need to make sure we have the necessary forces and capabilities in the region.”
In a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, Mr White Houses said that President Joe Biden “reaffirmed his commitment to Israel’s security against all threats from Iran, including the proxy terrorist groups of Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis.”
Kirby said Friday that that support will likely come in the form of personnel and equipment in the area.
