by

The number of refugees fleeing Ukraine to neighboring countries rose further to nearly 836,000 on March 1, according to a UNHCR report posted on its website today.

This is an increase of almost 160,000 people compared to the number of 677,000 presented yesterday, Tuesday, by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grady, urging the financing of humanitarian aid to the country and the people who have left. to escape the battles.

The HCR counts exactly 835,928 people of whom 453,982 fled to Poland alone.

Poland has been the main host country since the start of hostilities and the ensuing refugee wave.

It is followed by Hungary with 116,348 refugees, 14% of the total number.

Slovakia hosted 67,000 refugees, or 8% on March 1, and Russia 5.1% (42,900 people).

The numbers for the other main host countries were not announced until 13:00 Greek time.

UN authorities expect the refugee wave to intensify further, as the Russian military appears to be focusing its efforts on major Ukrainian cities.

According to the UN, 4 million people may want to leave the country to escape the hardships of war.

“We are witnessing what could be the biggest refugee crisis in Europe this century,” Filippo Grady said in Geneva yesterday.

The United Nations and its partner organizations yesterday called for $ 1.1 billion in aid to help Ukrainians staying in the country and just over $ 500 million for refugees.
