Flooding in Lithuania has caused a river to overflow in central Latvia near Gelgava, where storms had already hit last week and local authorities fear they will need to evacuate the area.

“Usually, cows graze on the plains near the Svete River. Now there are ducks swimming in the streets,” described a farmer, Aigars Karklins.
According to the weather service last week, 193 millimeters of rain fell in one day, a volume corresponding to two months’ worth of rainfall.
In the Baltic Sea city of Jurmala, known for its beaches, thousands of trees were uprooted by the winds and many houses were damaged.
“Behind our house there are now countless fallen pine trees. So much that we could open a sawmill,” said Axels Sandovskis, a Jurmala resident.
Many buildings were flooded in the city and train services were disrupted in this coastal city.
