Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi met today in Tehran with his Iranian counterpart and the country’s president, amid concerns over the military escalation between Iran and Israel following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniya.

Jordan has signed a peace treaty with Israel since 1994 and is considered a key ally of Washington in the region.

Safadi arrived in Tehran in the afternoon and met with interim foreign minister Ali Bagheri, Isna news agency reported. Safadi then held talks with Iranian President Massoud Pezheskian, according to a statement carried by the official Irna news agency.

The Iranian president called the killing of Haniya a “serious mistake” and said “this shameless act of the Zionists will not go unanswered.”

According to Amman, Safadi intends to “convey a message from King Abdullah II to the Iranian president” about “the situation in the region and bilateral relations.”

Earlier, Bagheri said that in the last 48 hours he had two phone conversations with his Egyptian and Jordanian counterparts. He described the situation in the Middle East as “sensitive” but warned that “Iran’s determination to demand an account” from Israel, its sworn enemy, is “serious”.
