Seven Americans were injured in a missile attack on a military base in Iraq
Seven Americans were wounded Monday night in a missile attack on a military base in Iraq, a US official said today, days after four pro-Iranian Iraqi fighters were killed by a US strike.
“Five soldiers and two workers were injured in the attack” with two rockets at the Ain al-Assad airbase, said the source, who asked not to be named.
Five of the wounded are being treated at the base while two have been transferred elsewhere, he said, clarifying that their lives are not in danger.
The Pentagon attributes the attack to “paramilitary groups linked to Iran».
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallad agreed in a phone call that there was a “dangerous escalation” in the region.
The White House also announced that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris “discussed measures (…) to protect our forces” and how the US will respond to attacks against its military personnel.
The Iraqi government announced today that the authorities seized a truck in which eight rockets were found and that they are looking for the perpetrators of the attack on the base.
Similar attacks occurred frequently during the early months of the war in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas.
At least 175 were recorded, but then they were greatly reduced. Most of them were claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a group of fighters from pro-Iranian armed groups.
