Turkey today Wednesday submits a declaration of intervention in the “genocide” case for which South Africa has appealed against Israel at the International Court of Justice in The Hague
This was stated by a Turkish diplomatic source, cited by the Reuters agency. The statement was expected to be made around 15:30 Turkish (and Greek) time. This intervention “pushes the international community to recognize and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” said the same source. South Africa’s initial appeal was discussed in The Hague in May.
Turkey is the seventh country to declare its involvement in the case after Nicaragua, Colombia, Libya, Mexico, Palestine and Spain.
It is estimated that the text submitted today to the International Court of Justice in The Hague supports the positions of South Africa and examines how to interpret the relevant articles of the Convention on Genocide, especially in the context of Israel’s “massacres” in Gaza from October 7, 2023. According with the Turkish side, Turkey will become the most important country so far to declare its involvement in the case and this is expected to strengthen the intervention decisions of other countries in the region.
New war of declarations
Meanwhile, the war of statements between Israel and Turkey is escalating with a new attack launched by Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, following the latter’s statement yesterday.
In a post on his X account, Katz said that “the anti-Semitic dictator Erdogan yesterday attacked the US and Western countries and said that they are unfortunately captives of Israel and a handful of Zionist fanatics. Erdogan, the captives are the citizens of Turkey who are prisoners of your dictatorship, after you blocked 57 million Instagram users in the country from accessing the account – but left access to your private Instagram account free. A leader who embraces Hamas and oppresses his people and acts like a dictator is a dictator.” reported Israel Katz in order to get an immediate answer from the representative of the AKP, Omer Celik, and also from the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
“The will of our president continues to read the crimes of modern Nazis in their faces,” said Celik. “Israel’s foreign minister is a photocopy of Hitler’s foreign minister, Ribbentrop (…) Katz’s words are the same as the words of the Nazis of that period. (…) . Turkey will continue to support the Palestinians in the strongest possible way.”
