According to the Revolutionary Guards, the Israeli forces they recognized and bombarded Sinwar’s home in the town of Khan Younis, south of the Gaza Strip, with the intention of assassinating him.
According to the Iranians, Israeli media reported that the mission was successful, with the Israeli military neutralizing the then-head of Hamas’ military wing.
However, after a few days the Hamas leader appeared at his demolished home and took a photo on his sofa challenging Israel which is committed to its extermination.
It is noted that the appointment of Yahya Shinwar as Hamas’ supreme leader formalizes a role he assumed in the early hours of October 7when the surprise attack on Israel, which he is believed to have masterminded, led to the bloodiest chapter of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
He is seen as a hardliner with closer ties to Hamas’ armed wing than his predecessor, Ismail Haniya, who was assassinated in the Iranian capital last month. Iran blames Israel for his death and the conflict between the two has heightened fears of sparking a wide-ranging regional war.
