A landslide that occurred in a landfill in the Ugandan capital Kampala resulted in the death of 8 people, it was announced today by the city authorities.

The incident happened late last night, after heavy rains hit the area, when parts of the dump collapsed, crushing nearby houses, the country’s media reported.

The Municipal Authority of the capital, which manages the area, announced that government forces and Red Cross personnel conducted searches in the area and rescued 14 people.

“Unfortunately, eight people have so far been found dead, six adults and two children. The rescue operations are continuing…” it says in a post on the account of the Municipal Authority in X.

The dump, known as Kiteezi, had been used as Kampala’s only waste site for decades and had turned into a large hill.

Footage broadcast by the country’s state television network NTV shows people walking through a section of the dump, which has flattened a house.
