“The documents were obtained illegally from sources hostile to the United States with the intent to interfere in the 2024 election and cause chaos,” a campaign spokesman said.
His campaign Donald Trump announced yesterday that it was a victim of hacking, accusing an agent “from abroad” of interfering with its internal communications and stealing documents, including a file on the candidate for vice president J. D. Vance.
Trump’s team hinted that behind the hacking was the Iran.
The Politico reported receiving emails from an anonymous user with internal campaign documents attached.
“These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, with the intent of interfering with the 2024 elections and wreaking havoc on our democratic process,” said Stephen Chang, a spokesman for the former Republican president’s campaign.
The Trump campaign cited a report by Microsoft researchers that said Iranian hackers linked to the government tried to break into the account of a “senior official” in the US presidential campaign in June. The hackers accessed an account belonging to a former political adviser and then used it to target the official, the report said. That report did not provide further details on the identity of the targets.
A Microsoft spokesman declined to name the officials or provide additional details after the report was published.
Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations said in an email that “the Iranian government has no intention or motivation to interfere in the United States presidential election.”
“We don’t believe the reports,” he added in response to the Trump campaign’s claims.
The former president had tense relations with Iran while in the White House. Under Trump, the United States killed Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in 2020 and withdrew from a multilateral Iran nuclear deal.
“Iranians know that President Trump will end his reign of terror as he did in his first four years in the White House,” Chang said.
Trump survived an assassination attempt in July. While there was no indication that the suspect had ties to Iran, CNN reported last month that the US had information about an Iranian plot against Trump. Iran has denied the accusations.
In 2016, thousands of Democratic National Committee emails were also leaked after being hacked, revealing communications from Hillary Clinton, then the party’s candidate and rival to Donald Trump.
The tempestuous tycoon, who had won a surprise election that year, was heavily criticized for encouraging the wiretapping of Democratic materials, an action blamed on Russia.
