Australia has been shocked by the murder of a 10-year-old by her mother on Tuesday night, with the little girl’s lifeless body being found by her father.

The alleged victim has been identified as 10-year-old Sophie Wang. Queensland police said the girl’s mother – named as Yingjing Xu, 46 – was charged on Tuesday night with Sophie’s alleged murder.

The girl is said to have suffered multiple injuries of stabbing in her home, including a wound to her neck.

“Yesterday, police were called to a residence in Carrara on the Gold Coast following a report that the girl had been discovered unconscious by her father,” Detective Constable Kent Ellis told a news conference.

“Despite the frantic efforts of her father and the emergency services, the young girl was pronounced dead. An investigation was immediately launched and as a result, the child’s mother was arrested for murder.”

Emergency services were called to the family’s home about 6pm on Tuesday and found an “extremely distressing scene”, Detective Constable Ellis said.

“In my 15-year career as a detective, it is one of the most shocking scenes I have seen”, he said characteristically.

Police said the girl’s mother was later found on a nearby road at around 10.25pm and arrested before she was charged.

“We understand this will cause concern in the community, but there is no threat to the safety of the community at this time,” said Detective Constable Ellis.

Shocked residents of the Australian community reported the tragic incident on Facebook on Tuesday night. “I live down the road and I’m in complete shock, my heart goes out to this family, I can’t imagine what they must be feeling. Rest in Peace, little angel,” said one woman.
