Federal prosecutor says Matthew Perry started using drugs again last fall
The cynicism of Matthew Perry’s killers is appalling. The longtime trusted assistant of beloved actor Kenneth “Kenny” Iwamasa administered the fatal dose of ketamine that killed beloved “Friends” star Matthew Perry on Oct. 28, 2023, US authorities revealed Thursday.
Federal prosecutor Martin Estrada said at a news conference that Perry resumed using drugs last fall. “These defendants took advantage of Matthew Perry’s addiction problems to enrich themselves,” Estrada explained. The inquest into the actor’s death “revealed the existence of an extensive illegal criminal network responsible for the distribution of large quantities of ketamine to Matthew Perry and others”.
The official said that Dr. Salvador Placencia “collaborated” with Iguamasa, who lived with Perry at his home in Los Angeles, to sponsor approx. 20 vials of ketamine to the actor over a period of two months.
The Justice Department said in a news release Thursday that Iwamasa “admitted to repeatedly injecting Perry with ketamine without medical training,” including “multiple injections” on the day he died.
He pleaded guilty on August 7 and faces prison time 15 years old.
Iwamasa states on his LinkedIn profile that he has worked for Perry for more than 25 years.
He writes in his biography: “I respond best to chaotic situations that require order. I am discreet, loyal and respect absolute confidentiality.”
Iwamasa was reportedly the person who found Perry dead in his hot tub at his California home last October. In Peri’s circulatory system they were identified 3.54 micrograms per milliliter of ketamine.
In addition to Iguamasa, Placencia and his collaborator, Dr. Mark Chavez, were also arrested and charged along with “Ketamine Queen” Jaswin Sanga and alleged trafficker Eric Fleming.
Authorities traced what Placencia, an urgent care doctor in California, had written about the actor in a text message. His cynicism is chilling: “I wonder how much this idiot will pay” he says characteristically, adding “let’s find out.”
The two doctors charged in Matthew Perry’s death are being investigated by the Medical Board of California, but their licenses are not being suspended, at least not yet.
Prosecutors say Dr. Placencia frequently injected Perry with large doses of ketamine … even administering the drug at Perry’s home. Placencia, who faces up to 120 years in prison, insists he is innocent, while Chavez pleaded guilty and struck a deal with prosecutors.
In December 2023, Perry’s official cause of death was confirmed to be the “acute effects of ketamine”, with other contributing factors such as drowning, coronary artery disease and buprenorphine, an opioid.
A doctor commented to Page Six that ketamine is “generally safe when administered by trained healthcare professionals in a medical setting to treat depression or PTSD.”
