Germany’s ambassador to Moscow sounded pessimistic when asked whether he thought Russia and Ukraine could negotiate an agreement to end the war. In an interview given to the Bonn newspaper General-Anzeiger, Alexander Graf Lambsdorf underlines that “currently, the Russian side does not show any willingness to negotiate, as it insists on excessive prerequisites.”

He explains that when Russian President Vladimir Putin says he is willing to talk with Ukraine’s leadership only after Ukrainian forces withdraw from all the territory he believes Russia has already annexed — including those that Russian troops don’t even have under their control – then it is clear that the Kremlin strongman is not serious.

Commenting on the Ukrainian invasion of Russia’s Kursk region, Lambsdorff says it was an “unpleasant surprise” that made Moscow nervous.

The German ambassador emphasizes that “one day Russia will finally have to realize that with this war it is achieving much less than it planned at the beginning”, that it is causing itself a “serious blow internationally” and that its economy has evolved into a purely war economy “in excess and it will not be sustainable”.
