The company claims a judge in Brazil issued “censorship orders”
The social networking platform X (formerly Twitter) has announced that it is suspending its operations on Brazil “with immediate effect” due to “censorship orders” he claims were issued by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
X says Moraes secretly threatened one of its legal representatives in Brazil, saying he would arrest him if he did not comply with an order to take down some content from the platform.
The Supreme Court of Brazil did not respond to a request for comment.
X remains available for the people of Brazil, billionaire Elon Musk’s platform added.
Earlier this year, Moraes ordered X to block some accounts as he investigates so-called “digital fighters” accused of spreading fake news and hate messages during the term of far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro. Moraes also launched an investigation into Musk after he said he would reactivate accounts that had been ordered blocked by a judge. The businessman had described the judge’s decisions as “unconstitutional”.
However, X’s representatives later told the Brazilian Supreme Court that the company would comply with his orders. In April, lawyers for the platform claimed that due to “operational issues” user accounts that Moraes had requested to be blocked remained active.
