A lawmaker from Paraguay’s conservative ruling party was killed today in a shootout with drug enforcement agents who attempted to search his home in Pedro Juan Caballero, police said.

The agents “received fire and returned fire, fatally wounding MP” Eulalio Gomez in the early hours of this morning, police chief Inspector Carlos Benitez told reporters.

According to Benitez, the police did not intend to arrest the MP but his son, Alejandro, for whom an arrest warrant had been issued. Alejandro took part in the exchange of fire and escaped, but then surrendered to the authorities.

Congressman Gomes of the Colorado party, a wealthy landowner from Pedro Juan Caballero, a region on the border with Brazil, had parliamentary immunity. Police were hoping to find documents in their home related to an investigation into his links to drug traffickers.

Eulalio Gomes and his son were at the center of a drug-trafficking investigation. In May 2022 the mayor of Pedro Juan Caballero, José Carlos Acevedo, was murdered by unknown assailants. Four months later, a 33-year-old radio station journalist was murdered by two men on a motorcycle.
