The American armed forces announced that yesterday Friday they carried out a “targeted” aerial bombardment on the territory of Syria, resulting in the death of the leader of the Tanzim Khuras al-Din organization, which is considered close to Al Qaeda.

It was Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Maki, the joint command of the US armed forces responsible for the Middle East (CENTCOM, “central command”) said via X, without specifying exactly where the bombing took place.

The Tanzim Khuras al-Din organization “is associated with the power of al-Qaeda in Syria” and embraces its purpose of committing “attacks against American and Western interests,” CENTCOM noted.

Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Makki was a “senior leader” in charge of “terrorist operations in Syria,” according to the same source.

For its part, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported earlier that a drone strike on a motorcycle in the southern sector of Idlib province killed the man, who the non-governmental organization said was a Saudi national.

Nearly 900 members of the American armed forces remain deployed in Syria, as part of an international anti-jihadist coalition with the mission to prevent the regrouping and re-strengthening of the jihadist organization Islamic State (IS).

After its consolidation and lightning advance in 2014, when it seized vast swaths of Syria and neighboring Iraq and imposed a reign of terror, IS saw its self-proclaimed “caliphate” crumble, under attack from multiple directions in both countries.

Despite its defeat, cores of the jihadist organization remain active in both countries. In Syria, they have folded into the vast desert from where they are launching attacks targeting both the Syrian army and a Kurdish-dominated faction.
