A policeman was killed on Friday by “gunmen” in Sistan-Baluchistan province, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, in southeastern Iran, Iran’s official news agency reported.

“The head of Hash’s crime investigation department was killed by gunmen in front of his home,” the IRNA news agency reported.

The Pakistan-based Sunni jihadist group Jaish al-Adl (“Army of Justice” in Arabic), which operates in southeastern Iran, claimed responsibility for the Telegram attack.

Iran describes Jaish al-Adl as a “terrorist organization”.

Sistan-Baluchistan, one of Iran’s poorest regions, is home to a large part of the Baloch minority, which belongs to Sunni Islam, while the citizens of the Islamic Republic are predominantly Shia.

The Iranian security forces, on the one hand, and members of the Baloch minority, Sunni radical organizations and drug traffickers are involved in sporadic bloody clashes there.

In April, ten members of Iran’s law enforcement forces were killed in two attacks that specifically targeted a police station in the area. Jaish al-Adl claimed responsibility.
