A man has died and another citizen is missing in central Turkey due to floods caused by heavy rains, the Turkish DHA news agency reported on Saturday and the governor of the affected region announced.

According to the DHA, a 52-year-old livestock farmer died in the floods in the town of Kirsehir; his body was found by search and rescue teams alerted by neighbors some “four kilometers from the location where he disappeared”, washed away by the waters.

“Citizens were excluded” in the district of Gyuluce, in Kayseri (Caesarea), after the landslides caused by the rains, added the agency. Emergency response teams have been dispatched and are operating in the area, according to the same source.

According to the governor of Kayseri province, Gekmen Cicek, the majority of the people who were trapped have now been “rescued”. However, the governor added via X that “investigations for a missing citizen are still ongoing.”

“The floods we experienced hit us all hard,” said Kayseri Mayor Mamdu Buyukilic, “but we will overcome this challenge with solidarity and determination.”

Other areas of central Turkey were also affected by flooding, notably the neighboring province of Sivas.

In September 2023, widespread flooding caused by torrential rains killed five people in northwestern Turkey, including two in Istanbul, where roads turned into raging rivers.
