Iran’s reformist President Massoud Pezheskian today appointed a member of the Sunni minority to the post of vice president in charge of rural development.

By decree, the president appointed Mr. Abdulkarim Hosseinzadeh to the position of vice president in charge of rural development and underdeveloped areas of the country, given his valuable experience“, says the website of the Iranian presidency.

Sunnis make up just 10% of the population in Shiite Islam-dominated Iran. After the Islamic revolution that led to the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran (1979), Sunnis rarely hold government posts.

The 44-year-old Hosseinzadeh has been representing the Naghadeh-Osnavieh constituency in the north-western tip of the country since 2012. He had made several speeches in parliament to defend the rights of Sunnis.

During the election campaign, Pezeskian had promised to increase the representation of women, youth and minorities – especially Sunnis – in his government.
