“I’m not afraid, I’m moving forward,” activist Tiziana Rodzio told local media
‘The Godfather’, or Sopranos, scenes in Rome… The ‘Cazamonica family’, a mafia-style syndicate operating in and around Rome, was accused of a black coffin that was left on Sunday in front of the residence of an activist fighting against the organized crime, the police announced.
The activist, Tiziana Rodzio, he is the president of the anti-mafia group called “Toripiubella”, which takes its name from the Tor Bella Monaca neighborhood where the main mansions of the Casamonicas were located, until they were demolished by the municipal authority in 2018 and 2019. During the demolition, a mysterious man was found treasure trove of jewelry, works of art but also large quantities of drugs.
Rodcio said she saw the casket, and that associates sent her pictures of it, but that she didn’t immediately realize it was meant as a threat to her.
“I’m not afraid, I’m moving forward” Rodcio told local media. “These are foolish gestures that make us even angrier, and we want to fight back.”
Rome police told CNN on Monday that the casket was being examined for fingerprints. Toripiubella, Rodcio’s activist group, told CNN they will not make a public statement as the investigation is ongoing.
Rodcio has denounced several family members in the pastbeing While her home and office have been broken into several times, she commented to La Repubblica newspaper that “it’s not every day you find a coffin under your house.”
Parties and agencies condemned the attempt to intimidate the activist.
The Casamonica were first identified as a mafia-style criminal organization by Italy’s Directorate of Anti-Mafia Investigations, or DIA, in the 1970s. They are often associated with extortion, and loan sharking, but have also been involved in threats like the one against Rodzio – and murder cases. It is estimated that there are about 1,000 members today.
The criminal group made headlines in 2015 when authorities in Rome allowed it to carry out a defiantly opulent funeral for the family patriarch, Vittorio Casamonica, which included a carriage for his coffin and a helicopter dropping rose petals over the Tor Bella Monaca neighborhood.
In fact, the public funeral had police protection and a band outside the church playing carols from the… Godfather trilogy.
