Germany on alert after the Solingen attack
The incident comes as Germany is on high alert after three people were killed and eight others injured in a knife attack on Friday at an outdoor festival in Solingen, about 45 kilometers from Mers.
26-year-old Syros, who is suspected of being linked to the jihadist organization Islamic State (IS), is accused of this action, which was characterized as terrorist by the German authorities.
Paying tribute to the victims on Monday, Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged to make Germany’s gun laws tougher, “especially with regard to the use of knives”.
Strengthening gun control will happen “very quickly,” Mr. Soltz promised.
The Solingen attack reignited the debate over migrants and refugees in the country and further increased pressure on Mr Solz and his government as a key state election approaches on Sunday.
Her alleged perpetrator should normally have been deported to Bulgaria, the country where he originally entered the EU, but he was apparently able to escape deportation proceedings with ease.
The day before yesterday, Social Democrat Chancellor Scholz underlined that the German authorities will “do everything in their power so that people who cannot and should not remain in Germany are repatriated and deported”.
