Hundreds of migrants, mostly from Latin American and Caribbean countries, cross Mexico every day trying to reach the US
Two Nicaraguan nationals – a man and a little girl – and an Ecuadorian national died when a car crashed into a group of migrants on foot or on bicycles in southern Mexico, authorities announced Thursday.
Another 17 people were injured in the accident in the state of Oaxaca, the Mexican National Migration Institute (INM) said.
“A private vehicle crashed into members of a caravan of migrants,” the INM said, confirming the death of three foreigners.
The accident happened early in the morning. A speeding driver lost control, Mexican media reported.
The man and the little girl were riding a bicycle.
Hundreds of migrants, mostly from Latin American and Caribbean countries, cross Mexico every day trying to reach the US to find a better life, leaving poverty, violence, or fleeing because of the political situation in their country. They are citizens of Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti.
On the way, they often become victims of the violence of “traffickers”, mafias, extortion by corrupt public officials, accidents, extreme weather events.
In December 2021, 50 people were killed in the state of Chiapas (south) when a semi-trailer truck carrying 160 illegal migrants crashed.
