In response to the invasion ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, the European Union quickly took a stand in favor of Ukraine, announcing sanctions against the Russian economy and the highest levels of government, and promising weapons and military equipment to the Ukrainian armed forces.
If before the crisis the European Union was full of internal disputes, with the United Kingdom leaving the bloc and discussions about the permanence of authoritarian countries like Poland and Hungary, European countries now present a united front against Russia – and are preparing to receive Ukrainian refugees.
