Erez Calderon, a 12-year-old former Hamas hostage, posted a moving video on Instagram today, calling for the release of his father, who has been held captive in the Gaza Strip since October 7.

The 12-year-old explains that he made the video in the hope that his father, Ofer, could somehow see it.

“It was difficult to talk on camera, but if it reaches my father it will be worth it,” says Erez.

“Perhaps this video will reach my father, as my mother’s voice reached me when I was a captive. Maybe this will help save him and bring him home. I’m just a kid who wants his dad by his side, I’m not asking for much – just for my dad to come back.”

Noting that he will celebrate his bar mitzvah in two months, the little boy looks into the camera and asks viewers: “How can I celebrate when my father is in Gaza?”

“I have a clear goal in life – to return,” the little boy still says.

Ofer Calderon was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz with his son Erez and daughter Sahar on October 7.

Sahar, 16, and Erez were released on November 27 as part of a temporary ceasefire deal brokered by Qatar and the United States between Hamas and Israel.

On Sunday, the Israeli military recovered six dead hostages from a tunnel in Rafah and blamed Hamas for their deaths. For its part, Hamas has threatened that the hostages will be returned to their relatives “wrapped in shrouds” if Israel continues its military operations.
