The arch was built in the 4th century AD. commemorating the victory of Constantine the Great – the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity – over Maxentius. It is about 25 meters high and is located in the same pedestrian zone as the Colosseum, one of the most important tourist attractions of the Italian capital.
“Lightning struck the arch just at this point and then around the corner and we saw it fall.” said a tourist, pointing to a large stone, lying on the ground.
In the agency’s footage, other fallen stones can be seen around the monument, while the staff of the Archaeological Park of the Colosseum hastened to collect them.
The damage was caused while a storm swept through the city, causing trees to fall and many streets to flood. The Civil Protection agency reported that 60 millimeters of rain fell in central Rome in less than an hour, an amount equivalent to a month’s worth in autumn under normal conditions.
