Former Home Secretary Priti Patel is the first of the Conservative Party leadership candidates to be dropped from the race to succeed Rishi Sunak.

In the first vote of the members of the party’s parliamentary group, he received the fewest votes and was suspended, as stipulated by the internal party procedure.

Former Immigration Undersecretary Robert Jenrick came first in the poll with 28 votes, and former Business Minister Kemi Bandenock came second with 22. Ms Bandenock is considered the most popular candidate among the party’s base.

Former Home Secretary James Cleverley came third with 21 votes, followed by former Home Secretary Tom Tugendhat with 17 and former Pensions Secretary Mel Stride with 16.

Those five left out Ms Patel who got 14 votes and advanced to next Monday’s second caucus vote, again with the latter disqualified.

A total of 118 MPs voted, meaning three did not exercise their right, with Mr Sunak believed to be among the three.

The four finalists will present their proposals at the Conservative Party conference in early October. Then the MPs will vote again, with the final two contenders being judged by the party members. The winner will be announced on November 2nd.
