The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has spoken of the tragic loss of a 5-year-old boy from a hyena attack
A 5-year-old child was killed by a hyena in Kenya, the African country’s wildlife agency said today, vowing to crack down on increasing attacks by the carnivores.
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) lamented the “tragic loss of a 5-year-old child from a hyena attack” on Wednesday night in Juja, Kiambu County, about 35 kilometers from Nairobi.
KWS said that since August 8, following a similar incident in Juja, an operation to eliminate “the menace” of these animals had been launched and 38 hyenas had been captured and relocated.
Local media reported that a 10-year-old child was killed by a hyena earlier this year. According to press reports, in recent years there has been an increase in cases of hyenas wandering near human dwellings in Kenya. This fact is due to the expansion of cities in areas where these animals were hunted. In December 2021, two people were killed by hyenas within 24 hours in a village only 50 kilometers east of Nairobi.
