“I am a woman, a mother, an Italian, a Christian and no one can deprive me of that,” Meloni had said before being elected prime minister
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban today highlighted his close relationship with his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni, calling her a “sister in Christ”, with the Hungarian nationalist prime minister noting that issues of cultural identity play a growing role in European politics.
“She is not just a colleague (of mine), she is a sister in Christ,” Orban told reporters on the sidelines of the TEHA economic forum in Chernobyl in northern Italy.
The way we shared common cultural roots in the past “did not play a major role in European politics, but today we are close to a new era,” the Hungarian prime minister said.
“I am a woman, a mother, an Italian, a Christian and no one can deprive me of that,” Meloni had declared before being elected prime minister.
She and Orban share the same positions on a number of issues, including the need for tougher immigration policies and the defense of traditional family values against what they call the LGBT lobby.
Orbán has been described as a defender of Hungary’s cultural identity against Muslim immigration and a defender of Christian values against Western liberalism.
Meloni, however, is a staunch defender of Ukraine, while Orban has been more critical than any other EU member state leader for supporting the bloc in Kiev’s war against the Russian invasion.
