Pianist Sergio Mendes, a legend of Brazilian music who made bossa nova known around the world, has died at the age of 83 in Los Angeles, his family announced yesterday, Friday, provoking a wave of tributes.
Sergio Mendes “died peacefully” Thursday at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by his wife and children, his family said in a statement. “In recent months, his health had been affected by the effects of prolonged Covid,” he added.

“Rest in peace, beloved genius,” wrote on Instagram Milton Nascimento, another legend of Brazilian music and one of the first to react to Mendes’ death, saluting “many years of friendship, collaborations and music.”
“At this moment of sadness, my thoughts go out to the family, friends and fans of Sergio Mendes,” responded Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who said he was “one of the greatest representatives and promoters of Brazilian music and culture around the world.”
