A major police operation is underway overnight in Kentucky to locate and arrest a man who opened fire on the main north/south highway Interstate 75, which crosses half of the US, around 1 a.m. Greek time.

Four to six people were hit by bullets, according to Scotty Pennington, a police spokesman in the state, and the gunman is still at large.

There are “seriously injured” but no deaths have been reported at this stage, local news station WYMT reported, citing the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.

The authorities have launched a manhunt to locate 32-year-old Joseph Couch, who they consider a suspect in the attack and describe him as “armed and dangerous”.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, urged state residents to avoid the area via X and added that “we will provide more details as they become available.” “Please avoid I-75 (…) until further notice! Use alternative routes and don’t even come near,” called the mayor of the city of London (population 8,000), Randall Weddle, via Facebook.
