An incredible – and inhumane – incident occurred in South Carolina, where the authorities asked a death row inmate to choose his own method of execution.

Freddie Owens, 46, could not choose how he would die and left the decision up to his lawyer, according to the Associated Press.

According to court documents, the lawyer reluctantly chose lethal injection over the electric chair or the firing squad.

Owens, whose execution is set for Sept. 20, said he cannot choose his execution method citing his Muslim faith, which considers suicide a sin.

Owens has been sentenced to death for killing a store clerk during a string of robberies in Greenville in 1997.

His execution will mark the first time South Carolina has executed an inmate in more than 13 years.
