A 33-year-old man is believed to have fled Australia after he approached a baby in a Brisbane park on August 31 and poured boiling coffee over him, causing “severe burns” to his face and limbs.

The attack on the 9-month-old boy shocked Australia and Queensland police issued an arrest warrant for acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, a charge that carries a possible life sentence.

However, according to the BBC, the attacker is believed to have flown out of the country 6 days after the incident and just 12 hours before authorities were able to confirm his identity.

According to police, the man is an “itinerant” worker who had traveled to Australia repeatedly since 2019 and had addresses in both New South Wales and Victoria. He was also aware of “police methodologies” and “conducted counter-surveillance activities” to avoid them.

Authorities said they now know his identity and where he may have fled, and are working with relevant agencies overseas to arrest him.
