The killing of Eisenur Ezgi Egi, the Turkish-American activist who was killed by Israeli forces at a protest in the occupied West Bank last week, was “unprovoked and unjustified” by Anthony Blinken today, with the US secretary of state saying the incident showed that the Israeli security forces must make some fundamental changes to their rules of engagement.

“No one should be shot and killed for taking part in a demonstration,” Blinken told a news conference in London, in his harshest public criticism yet of the Israeli army.

“In our judgment, the Israeli security forces need to make some fundamental changes in the way they operate in the West Bank, including changes to their rules of engagement,” he noted.

Earlier today the IDF – the Israeli military – announced that Eiggy’s death was likely the result of accidental Israeli fire. The army added that it had sent a request for an autopsy on 26-year-old Aigi.

According to the UN, Eiji was killed by Israeli forces while taking part in a demonstration against Jewish settlement in Beita, near Nablus, in the northern part of the occupied West Bank, Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967.
