“This kind of misinformation is dangerous because there will be people who will believe it,” John Kirby reported.
THE White House warned today that the Republicans are spreading dangerous conspiracy theories about Haitian immigrants after senator and vice presidential candidate J. D. Vance and other top party officials in their posts accused Haitians of eating cats and other companion animals.
“What we’re very concerned about is that we have elected officials in the Republican party who are promoting, you know, another conspiracy theory that’s aimed at dividing people based on lies and, let’s be honest, based on an element of racism,” the spokesman said. National Security Council John Kirby.
“This kind of misinformation is dangerous because there will be people who will believe it, no matter how ridiculous and stupid it is, and may act on that information in a way that will hurt someone. That’s why it has to stop,” he stressed.
Vance, his running mate Donald Trumpwrote Monday on Platform X: “Reports now indicate that some people’s pets have been kidnapped and eaten by people who should not be in the country. In the same post, he claimed that Haitian immigrants are “causing chaos” in Springfield, his hometown in Ohio.
Other Republicans and their supporters, such as Sen. Ted Cruz and Elon Musk have posted similar accusations and memes in recent days.
Local police have not received any reports of Haitian immigrants or anyone else stealing and eating pets, according to the Springfield News-Sun.
The “conspiracy theory” started in a Facebook group where someone posted that a cat had gone missing, according to ABC News. The same person then claimed, without any proof, that Haitians took the cat to eat it.
Vance admitted today that the allegations were baseless. “It is possible, of course, that all these rumors will turn out to be false,” he wrote in another post on the X platform. He then blamed Haitian immigration for problems in local health services, education and other issues.
