Iran has threatened to take “measures” in response to new sanctions announced by the UK, Germany and France, with Tehran again denying accusations that it is supplying ballistic missiles to Russia for use in Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

Yesterday, France, Germany and Britain strongly condemned the transfers of Iranian ballistic missiles to Russia and announced that they would work together to impose sanctions, including on the Iranian airline Iran Air.

“This action by the three European countries is part of the continuation of the hostile policy of the West and economic terrorism against the Iranian people,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will respond appropriately and proportionately,” he added without specifying what those “measures” would be.

Kanani once again boasted that his country has delivered weapons to Russia to be used in the war in Ukraine.

“As previously pointed out, any allegation that the Islamic Republic of Iran sold ballistic missiles to the Russian Federation is completely baseless and false,” the Iranian official stressed.

On Tuesday, the governments of France, Germany and Britain condemned “Iran’s export and Russia’s acquisition of Iranian ballistic missiles” and announced they would impose new sanctions against Tehran, mainly targeting the aviation industry.

“We now have confirmation that Iran made these transfers” of missiles, diplomats from the three countries said in a joint statement. “We will take immediate action to terminate our bilateral air services agreements with Iran.”

Then US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, during a press conference in London with his British counterpart David Lammy, claimed that “Russia has received ballistic missiles and will probably use them within the next few weeks in Ukraine against Ukrainians.”

In retaliation, the US, a sworn enemy of Iran, announced that it had moved, along with allied countries, to sanction six Iranian drone and ballistic missile companies, suppliers to Russia as part of a contract signed in late 2023, as well as 10 directors and their employees.

Iran Air is among the targets of these economic sanctions because it made deliveries, according to the US Treasury Department.

Today, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also denied the Western accusations and denounced the sanctions.

“Iran has not delivered ballistic missiles to Russia. Full stop,” he wrote in X.

“Once again, the US and the troika (London, Paris and Berlin) are acting on false information and flawed logic,” he said. “Sanctions are not the solution, but they are part of the problem,” he added.
