Trump and Harris met today in Manhattan for the 9/11 memorial service
US presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trumpaccompanied by outgoing President Joe Biden, made a rare – and fragile – show of unity in New York today, attending a ceremony together to mark the 23rd anniversary of the attacks September 11, 2001.
In this historic election battle for the White House, where within a few weeks Donald Trump escaped an assassination attempt, Joe Biden threw in the white towel and the Kamala Harris took over, the vice president can now also count on the support of popular pop star Taylor Swift. That support didn’t sit well with the Republican billionaire who predicted the singer would “probably pay the price in the market” for music.
In an unexpected development, Trump and Harris met today in Manhattan for the 9/11 memorial service. As in their phone call last night in Philadelphia, they exchanged a handshake – with Trump making a face that hinted at a smile – as the president looked on. Biden.
In his announcement, the outgoing president emphasized that “23 years ago terrorists believed they could bend us and bring us to our knees. They were wrong and always will be wrong. Even in the darkest hours, we saw light, we faced fear, we came together.” Biden also praised US values of “freedom, democracy and unity.”
As is customary, the ceremony read out the names of the 2,977 people killed when planes hijacked by members of al Qaeda crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania.
