The 1887 painting Les canots amarrés (Boats at Anchor) will be sold by Christie’s Hong Kong on September 26 and has an estimate of $30 million to $50 million.
According to the auction house, the painting was originally in the collection of the royal family of the Bourbons – Two Sicilies, descendants of the historical rulers of Sicily and southern Italy.
it was bought by Italian actress Edi Wessel from Sotheby’s London in 1991 and is now being offered to Christie’s by her daughter, Princess Camilla, who acquired it through a family trust.

If the prediction comes true and sells for 50 million, “Les canots amarrés” will become the most expensive work by a Western artist sold at auction in Asia, surpassing the current record holder, “Warrior” from 1982 by Jean-Michel Basquiat. which sold 41.7 million by Christie’s in 2021.
