The state-run Russian network is conducting fundraising campaigns for weapons and military equipment for Russia’s military, the US secretary of state said.
The role of the Russian state media network RT goes far beyond that of propaganda as according to new findings it is a key part of Russia’s war machine and its efforts to undermine Western countries, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced.
The US State Department announced new sanctions against RT saying it is working hand-in-hand with the Russian military and conducting fundraising campaigns to pay for weapons, armor and other equipment for soldiers fighting in Ukraine.
The State Department released declassified US intelligence findings suggesting RT is fully integrated into Russia’s intelligence services around the world and announced it is launching a diplomatic campaign to provide countries with information about the dangers associated with RT’s activities .
“Thanks to new information, much of it from RT employees, we know that RT had cyber capabilities and was involved in covert intelligence and influence operations and military procurement,” Anthony Blinken said.
While RT has been sanctioned for spreading Kremlin propaganda and disinformation, Blinken said the network has also created websites posing as legitimate news sites to spread disinformation and propaganda in Europe, Africa and elsewhere.
He also said the network has expanded its cyber operations by adding a new unit with ties to Russian intelligence.
