Earlier, Joe Biden had called for an end to the targeting of Haitians after Trump’s statements that immigrants are eating pets in Ohio
Donald Trump promised mass deportations of Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, shortly after US President Joe Biden called for an end to attacks on that community.
“We’re going to do big deportations in Springfield, Ohio,” Trump said at a news conference at the Los Angeles golf resort.
It is noted that Trump continued his attacks on immigrants after making derogatory comments during Tuesday night’s debate with Kamala Harris.
Trump claimed the Haitian community was eating pets, angering Biden, who at a White House event celebrating Black excellence, Biden referred to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre as a proud Haitian American girl.
“A community under attack in our country right now. It’s just wrong. There’s no place for them in America. This has to stop — what he’s doing. It has to stop,” Biden said.
Leaders of the Haitian community in the United States said the Republican candidate’s remarks could endanger lives and fuel further tensions in Springfield, Ohio, where thousands of recent Haitian arrivals have boosted the local economy.
Trump’s “eat the dogs, eat the cats” comments during the debate were the latest in a long list of false claims about immigrants that have defined his political career, Reuters reports. A similar false claim was made by his vice president, Senator J. D. Vance for Ohio, on social media.
