Starmer reportedly “neglected to state” that major Labor donor Waheed Ali also covered the cost of his wife’s clothes
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer broke parliamentary rules by not declaring that a wealthy businessman and Labor Party donor bought high-end clothes for his wife Victoria, the Sunday Times reported today.
According to the Times, Starmer, prime minister since July, is facing an investigation after “neglecting to declare” that major Labor donor Waheed Ali covered the cost of a personal dressmaker, clothes and clothing repairs for the prime minister’s wife.
The prime minister’s financial records, listed on the Parliament website, show he has received many donations from Ali, including several pairs of glasses, work clothes and living expenses.
The Sunday Times they reported that these donations were declared, but the clothes given to his wife were not.
A Downing Street spokesman said in a statement sent to Reuters that Starmer and his team had sought advice from the authorities when taking office and believed they had followed the rules.
“However, following further investigation this month, we declared more items,” the spokesman said.
Ali is a British media entrepreneur and former chairman of online fashion retailer ASOS.
According to its code of ethics House of Commons, MPs must provide information about their financial benefits that can reasonably be considered to influence their work.
A Conservative Party spokesman called for a full investigation into “apparent serious breaches of parliamentary rules”.
